So far I'm leaning towards using Stencyl to prototype the game if it can do the procedural stuff I want. I'm considering Stencyl though have also wondered about AppGameKit 2 or even Unity. My interest is to develop a really polished art style as the standout attraction for my variant among a million other games. I'd like to procedurally generate terrain from a set of prebuilt terrain blocks. What type of game do you feel Stencyl is pushing you towards? So far I'm getting the impression it's best suited for simple platformers/Flappy Bird style games.Ĭoincidentally a Flappy Bird type game is what I'm wanting to start right now. Even if you are a more experienced developer, so long as your project is 2D, Stencyl may still be a great choice for you. If you are just starting out and are looking for an accessible, well documented and approachable 2D game engine, Stencyl is a great solution. Stencyl is completely free for Web targets, while desktop deployment is available for 99$ a year and iOS/Android + Desktop is 199$.Ī bit of a spoiler, but I was extremely impressed with Stencyl. Stencyl is programmed using a Visual drag and drop brick programming language, but at any time you can edit the generated Haxe code. It provides most of the tools you need to create a game included a full featured 2D level editor supporting painting, layers, collisions and more. Stencyl is a 2D cross platform (Windows, Mac, Linux) game engine capable of targeting those platforms plus Flash, Web, iOS and Android. In addition to the text version there is also a video version which is just under an hour in length. This is part of the Closer Look at series which is intended to give game developers a quick overview of what a game engine includes, how it works and if it's right for them. Stencyl is a cross platform game engine that is currently part of the Humble Bundle, so I figured now was as good a time as any to take a closer look at Stencyl.
